Dazed and desperate, Miriam cried out for help, not for herself but for Jamila, her 9 month old baby, struggling to survive, thin with dry pale skin, hallow cheeks and sunken eyes, breathing with so much difficulty. “Please help my baby”, Marian begged the health centre worker.
“I am sorry”, she was told. “We are not equipped to handle such critical cases here, however we can refer you to the hospital that does.” With that the health worker moved away. Miriam tried getting to the hospital she was referred to as fast as she could. But it was very far and she was tired. She had not had a meal in three days. No money to pay for transport, she walked under the scorching sun, concern for her baby giving her the strength to carry on. It seemed the journey would never end.
Suddenly she realizes she could no longer hear Jamila’s heavy breathing. She breaks into a frantic run, hoping to save her child. But it was too late. The baby was gone before the doctor at the hospital could attend to him.
Yet another innocent victim of poverty gone. Quite simply, lack of funding to efficiently tackle and prevent malnutrition leads to the loss of innocent lives like Jamila and the millions of under five (5) children like him who die every year.
