"Paperback Writer" is a song written by Lennon/McCartney and recorded by the Beatles in 1966. Released as the A-side of a single that had the song "Rain" as the B-side, it reached the top of the British and American charts. The song was later included on the compilation albums Hey Jude, The Beatles 1962–1966, Past Masters, Volume Two and 1. It is one of the first music videos in music history.
The song
The single was the Beatles' first not to speak of love, and the song's lyrics were written as a letter sent by an author to a book publisher asking to accept his new book. The inspiration would have come from an actual letter sent to Paul by an aspiring writer.[1]
The song's composition is credited to Lennon/McCartney, although many believe the song was written by Paul alone. However, in an interview in the 1990s[2], he clarified the issue: "I got to John's house and told him about the idea of writing a song about an author, like a letter to an editor. So we went to John and I sat down and finished the song, but it was credited to me because the original idea was mine."
In 2014 the guitar played by John Lennon in this song was put up for sale at auction.[3]
It is one of the first music videos in musical history.
