Though Rosenborg served as a royal residence for only about a century, it played a key role in Danish history. Kings and queens lived here intermittently until the early 18th century, with its most famous resident being Christian IV himself, who died within its walls in 1648.
In 1838, Rosenborg was opened to the public as a museum—one of the first royal collections in the world to be displayed in its original setting. Today, it is part of the Danish Royal Collection, and a visit offers an intimate, immersive journey through 400 years of royal life, art, and culture.
Interior Wonders: Rooms of Opulence and History
Step inside Rosenborg, and you're instantly transported into a world of lavish décor, ceremonial artifacts, and timeworn grandeur. Each room tells a chapter in Danish royal history:
The Knight’s Hall: Perhaps the castle’s most iconic room, this grand hall features coronation thrones made of narwhal tusk (once thought to be unicorn horn), and is guarded by three silver lions. The hall is adorned with tapestries commemorating King Christian V’s military victories.
