"I Am the Walrus" is a Beatles song composed by John Lennon, credited to the duo Lennon-McCartney, and released on the 1967 album Magical Mystery Tour.
Recording began on September 5, 1967, and concluded on September 29, 1967. Duration 4'36”. John Lennon wrote part of the lyrics, according to him, on two different drug-taking "trips". Some verses were written after John Lennon read that a teacher at his old school, Quarry Bank Grammar School, was using Beatles song lyrics for English classes. So he wrote some completely meaningless verses to confuse those who would use this song for analysis.
The song is the combination of three different songs that John decided to merge into one. The first is inspired by an ambulance siren: "I-am-he as you-are-he, "Mister cit-y police-man". The second begins with the verse: "Sitting in an english garden...". The third is the mixture of the lyrics he wrote to confuse grammarians.
The lyrics are, as a whole, meaningless. Numerous interpretations have been given over the years to understand it. The title of the song, loosely translated, is "I am the walrus"
The orchestra was added on September 27th, along with the voices of Mike Sammes' singers, who do the "ho-ho-ho", "ha-ha-ha", "Oompah-Oompah", "got one, got one". On September 29, John Lennon randomly tunes into BBC radio in London and records an audition of a Shakespeare play, King Lear, act four, scene six, and includes it in the recording.
