Hello Nu Yawkers! Today I am back in beautiful Atlantic City on the southern end of the iconic Atlantic City Boardwalk to do a room tour in the Havana Tower of the Tropicana Hotel and Casino! It's been a while since I stayed at the Havana Tower and I was really looking forward to it! In the beginning of the video I show you how simple it is to park at the tower, use the check in kiosk right by the elevators and get into your room all within minutes! The Havana Tower is quite far from the main registration area, parking and other towers so my method saves time and foot pain! The Havana Tower rooms were renovated about 5 years ago and are in good shape, clean and comfortable. My room number was 5309 and my check in print out said I was on floor 53. The elevator indicated that I reached floor 53 and had many more buttons for floors above me. However the Havana Tower only has 33 floors! How can this be? I'll discuss in the video. El año 1.910 se inician las obras de la actual Gran Vía. Las excelentes perspectivas que este desarrollo urbanístico ofrece, llevan a considerar a la Junta Rectora del Centro del Ejército y la Armada, la posibilidad de aprovechar la ocasión de adquirir dos solares contiguos, procedentes de los caseríos derribados, para construir en ellos un edificio social.
Se calculó acertadamente que el préstamo bancario necesario para llevar a cabo la operación podía amortizarse sin excesivo esfuerzo teniendo en cuenta la cantidad que se abonaba por el alquiler del Palacio de Montijo. Decidida la operación, el 16 de septiembre de 1.914 se concierta con el Banco Hipotecario de España un préstamo de 600.000.- pesetas, quedando como garantía la finca adquirida para la construcción del nuevo edificio.
Avanzadas las obras, la Junta Rectora del Centro del Ejército y de la Armada consideró que el crédito solicitado resultaba insuficiente a su propósito, necesitándose una ampliación por importe de 135.000.- pesetas. Ello motivó un nuevo acuerdo con el Banco Hipotecario, aprobado por la Junta del Centro en reunión extraordinaria celebrada el 11 de mayo de 1.916, obteniendo del Banco la ampliación del crédito inicial concedido por una suma total de 735.000.- pesetas, a pagar en cincuenta años, con la garantía del edificio construido.
No fue necesario, sin embargo, demorar hasta cincuenta años el pago de la cantidad prestada por el Banco Hipotecario. La inteligente gestión de la Junta Rectora del Centro presidida por el General López Torrens y la generosidad de la masa social permitieron cancelar la deuda con mucha anticipación al plazo acordado para su vencimiento. La cancelación de la deuda consta en el Registro de la Propiedad, en la inscripción del folio 144 de la finca 3.579 que, en su nota "5ª Cancelación", acredita que "el Banco Hipotecario ha recibido del Centro del Ejército y de la Armada la devolución de la totalidad del préstamo otorgado, por lo que expide carta de pago y corriente en la cancelación total de la hipoteca".
Y así queda reflejado en escritura otorgada con Madrid a 6 de agosto de 1.924, ante el Notario D. Fidel Perlado y Moreno. Nuestro edificio social, en Gran Vía nº 13 fue inaugurado el 16 de noviembre de 1.916. Como en ocasión anterior, el solemne acto fue presidido por el monarca reinante, S.M. D. Alfonso XIII, acompañado de las altas autoridades de la Nación, Cuerpo Diplomático y representantes de las Reales Academias. Como asociación podemos sentirnos justamente orgullosos de poseer uno de los edificios más hermosos de los construidos en la Gran Vía madrileña.
El proyecto de construcción de nuestra sede se adjudicó al prestigioso arquitecto D. Eduardo Eznarriaga, autor en nuestra capital de otras notables edificaciones, como los teatros Alcázar, Calderón y Beatriz. Se inclinó Eznarriaga por un estilo arquitectónico que imperaba en la época y, que él adoptaba en la mayoría de sus obras: el "Modernismo", conocido en Francia como "Art Nouveau", en Inglaterra, como "Moderm Style" y en Italia, "Liberti". Este estilo era muy frecuente en aquellos años y viene a definir el fin de la llamada "Belle Epoque", con un aire decadente y cierto naturalismo ornamental muy modernista.
En España se llamó también a este estilo arquitectónico "Alfonso XIII". De esta época son, entre otros, los hoteles Ritz y Palace y el Casino de Madrid.
