So it turns out for mining cryptocurrency, all of the hard work is being done in the graphics cards memory itself - there really isnt that much super high speed data transfer going on back and fourth from the motherboard to the cards. That means that you can plug in multiple GPUs to the same motherboard, any motherboard, and you do not need an expensive mining specific one while you still have PCI-e slots left empty. And even once you’ve used up all of your slots - this little golden goose can give you one more spot to plug in..
This a very small form factor gigabyte B450M motherboard I bought on amazon for 60 bucks. This motherboard only has three PCI-e slots on it, one 16x, one 4x and one 1x.
These, however, are FOUR RTX 3080s all plugged in and each able to hash at 95mh/s, thanks to the little m.2 to PCI-e 4x adapter thing.
Installation is really really easy - You just plug it in, push it down and screw down the little screw that was already in this hole when the board was delivered. It does force you to use SATA for an SSD, but thats plenty fast for its limited use on a mining rig. Then make sure to power it from your PSU - and bim bam boom, your computer will just know what to do with it and everything will work. Which I found a little mysterious if Im honest - but nevertheless there it was.
If youre using windows and the card doesnt show up, or doesnt report its temperature or doesnt work like it seems like it should - reinstall your graphics drivers and in almost all cases that will solve it.

Powering 4 RTX 3080s in one spot is not as straight forward, unless you’ve thought ahead and purchased something like a 1200watt power supply. Which I hadn’t, so the trick is to use two separate PSUs and fool one of them into providing power by using one of these tester things, or googling which two pins to short together to make it start up. That and dont put much else on the same plug or you will blow a breaker.
