These additions, led by McCarthy Building Companies, JIVE Architecture, and Kenneth Ussenko Design, balance modern flair with the property’s historic integrity.
With 364 rooms, including the boutique Cabana Suites added in 2009, El Cortez offers a range of accommodations, from budget-friendly Vintage and Pavilion Rooms to the luxurious Jackie Gaughan Suite, a 2,700-square-foot penthouse with a pink-and-gold interior, once home to former owner Jackie Gaughan. The property is adults-only (21+ since April 2022), ensuring a gaming-focused environment with 700 slot machines, 25 table games, and a race and sports book operated by Station Casinos. Dining options include Siegel’s 1941, a nod to Bugsy Siegel, serving classic American fare, and Sushi Ichiban for Japanese cuisine. The Parlour Bar & Lounge, with its mobster-themed decor, offers happy-hour specials, while a spa and fitness center provide relaxation.
El Cortez’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to evolve while preserving its storied past. I just completed an interview with John Griffo of the The Commerce about developments at The Commerce including their development of Vegas-like games, about the possibility of another initiative in California to expand slot machines into poker rooms, the status of online poker, and added entertainment options at The Commerce.
