Three years ago, a little girl named Happiness Ejoga was living far from the life every child deserves.

Her parents, who lived in the village, could not afford to send her to school. So Happiness stayed with her aunt, Mrs. Sarah Onyebuchi, Mrs. Sarah ran a small food shop serving factory workers and longed to give Happiness an education, but financial struggles kept that dream out of reach. Instead, Happiness spent her days helping her aunt, carrying trays of food when her hands should have been holding books.

Then one day, everything changed.

While Happiness was busy among the factory workers, a car slowed down, and a passerby noticed her. Filled with compassion, the person called her over and asked why she wasn’t in school. Unknown to Happiness, this it was the Director of the InnerCity Mission for Children.

Determined to help, the Director sent a social worker to learn more about her situation. Soon, Happiness’ story was rewritten.

She was enrolled into one of our InnerCity Mission Schools, where children receive 100% free education. She was given a full set of school kits uniform, shoes, socks, bag, and stationery and, for the first time in her life, she walked into a classroom instead of a factory floor. Beyond learning, Happiness also began receiving daily free breakfast and lunch, nourishing her body as well as her mind.

Today, Happiness is no longer weighed down with adult responsibilities. She is back where she belongs in school, joyful, learning, and dreaming about her future.

But Happiness’ story is not unique. Across the world, millions of children are still out of school, trapped in poverty, and waiting for someone to notice them.

This new academic year, the InnerCity Mission is set to enroll even more children like Happiness across our network of 14 free schools in underserved communities.
