Meet the NGO Building Free Schools Across Africa and Asia

Since its inception, the InnerCity Mission for Children, a member agency of the Chris Oyakhilome Foundation International, has provided marginalized and vulnerable children access to free basic education. Through its network of primary schools spread across Africa and Asia, over 3000 orphaned, vulnerable, and excluded children have received scholarships to start and complete their primary education. Before now , there were eight (8) 100% free InnerCity Mission Schools with others under construction. The latest addition to this network is the InnerCity Mission School, Murbai Community, Taraba State, North-East Nigeria.

Murbai community in Ardo Kola Local Government Area suffered attacks by bandits. The attacks disrupted the education of the children as the only government school was affected. The InnerCity Mission for Children stepped in to help the children continue their education by setting up temporary learning centers. Over 300 children in the community benefited from these centers as they received literacy lessons and psychosocial support weekly. However, the need was clear that the children of the Murbai community required a permanent structure that would deliver early childhood education as well as uninterrupted access to 6-year formal primary education.

The InnerCity Mission School, Murbai, which is the 9th School in the expanding network of InnerCity Mission schools will benefit children from the Murbai community and its environs. It is the second InnerCity Mission School in North-East Nigeria which offers free primary education to disadvantaged and marginalized children irrespective of gender, race, religion, and ethnicity.

Present at the commissioning of the school were traditional rulers, senior community leaders, top dignitaries from the LoveWorld Nation, Government representatives, and other key stakeholders from various communities.

In her welcome address, the Director of the InnerCity Mission, Mrs. Omoh Alabi, said This structure which we commission today is a symbol of our long-term commitment to the growth and development of the Nation’s invaluable resource and future – its children, equipping them with solid foundational knowledge which has the potential to mold them into profitable adults who would contribute rather than tax the society.”

The InnerCity Mission School is 100% free as through the support of Partners and Donors, the InnerCity Mission gives the enrolled children school supplies, adequate learning tools, access to qualified teachers, free meals, and more at no cost. This speaks to the commitment of the Chris Oyakhilome Foundation International to nation-building and economic development. Education would not only build a strong foundation for the individual child’s life, but its benefit extends to the family, community, and general society.

In the words of a Partner of the InnerCity Mission present at the event, “This Primary School in the Murbai community will give boys and girls alike equal access to innovative educational content, psychosocial support, skills acquisition, and more. At the end of their time at the InnerCity Mission School, the children will be equipped with necessary tools to help them live above poverty and deprivation and grow up to be responsible adults.”

The InnerCity Mission Primary School, Murbai is fully open. Pupils who were enrolled received their uniforms, books, school bags, and other materials and are set to commence their academic session.
